If you are a parent like me, you know of the intense, immediate bond you share with your child or children the moment they come into the world. With that love comes worry. You worry that they won’t get hurt. You worry that they won’t get sick. You worry as to whether or not they will be liked by their peers. You just worry about them because you love them. As children grow up, they face many of the same obstacles we as parents did at their age like learning to ride a bike for the first time, making new friends in school, forcing down fruits and vegetables…you know the really tough times in life.

As much as we may wish to believe that our children are impervious to drug and alcohol temptation, the reality is that they are not. The best thing we as parents can do the prevent our child from using drugs and alcohol is to talk with them about drugs and alcohol. Helping our kids to feel like they can speak to us about anything, keeps the channels of communication open and increases the likelihood that they will want to express their experiences with drugs and alcohol with us. As parents we may think that testing our children for drugs will hamper our relationship with them, but it won’t. Using drug testing kits will show our children that we love them, and that it’s important to us that they stay away from anything that might harm them. Sure, initially they may be offended, but, in the end, they’ll know that much more how much you love them and care for them. So, if you have a child who is old enough to understand what drugs are and how to use them, I would greatly encourage you to test them. In doing so, you might just save their life. Our children are a gift from the Lord. Let us love them and protect them.
